Penta People: Meet Florian Wejda, Penta’s Business Development Lead

Anyone who starts a business has to think about a lot of things – from the purpose of the business to the right way to approach potential customers. But the key to long-term success often lies in further developing the original business model and making it attractive to new customers.
At Penta, this is where Florian Wejda comes into play. He is responsible for our business development, constantly checking for new potential groups of customers who would benefit from Penta’s products and services. So, please meet Florian.
Florian, when and why did you join our lovely Penta team?
After graduating, I worked in investment banking for a while. Although it was very intense, challenging and packed with different topics, I realized that this job would not give me what I was actually looking for: To build something meaningful. In 2018, our CFO, Igor, told me about joining Penta and what the team wanted to achieve.
I was impressed by the idea, so I decided to take the chance and become a part of the team.
What do you particularly like about Penta?
Oh, where to start? First of all, it’s the great team spirit and the exceptional customer-centric mindset of each individual Pentonian. Every day brings new challenges, which we as a “big family” tackle together and where we learn from each other.
Then, of course, there is the product we offer and the vision we strive for. The business banking market is huge, with around 4 million SMEs and self-employed people, but unfortunately neglected by the established banks. At Penta, we are rethinking the way banking should be done in today’s world, always asking ourselves what are the pain points of businesses and how can they be transformed into something valuable.
Last but not least, the variety of topics I am confronted with. I can truly say that at the end of each day I have learned something new.

Would you like to tell where you grew up, or what you have already seen of the world?
I was born and grew up in Leipzig. I started judo at the age of 6, went to a sports school and became a member of the national youth team at 15. This meant that I professionalized this sport with several hours of training per day. During this time I was able to visit some fantastic countries like Japan, South Korea, Brazil and Mexico – even if mostly only for competitions or training camps ;)
What did your academic career look like?
After I had to give up my sports career due to injury, I decided to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in General Management at a business school in Cologne. This bachelor’s degree helped me gain a solid understanding of high-level business topics in various aspects such as marketing, entrepreneurship, finance, logistics, etc.
Alongside my studies, I worked in a global listed company to gain relevant practical experience. After graduation, I moved back to my hometown Leipzig to complete my Master’s degree in International Management and Entrepreneurship. My highlight during the master’s program was the 6-month semester abroad in Portugal – a country I fell in love with.
What exciting things have you already experienced in your professional life?
For me, the most exciting thing was coming to Penta in the first place. At the time I joined, Penta was really young with only about 15 employees, a customer base of less than a thousand clients and only a basic feature set compared to today. But I gave it a shot and traded my “safe” job in investment banking for the adventure of building a business banking platform with a highly motivated team. Although it was considered too insecure by some of my friends and former colleagues, I have to say that it was one of the best and most exciting experiences of my life.
So, what challenge will you tackle next in your role?
My most important topic is scaling the Business Development team and making sure that we have a solid and highly motivated team at hand which is able to tackle all relevant topics for further growth.
Besides that, I am looking into different customer segments that could be interesting for us and define appropriate Go-to-Market strategies. I am doing this in close collaboration with the Marketing, Product, and CRM teams.

Pretty easy: I want to be a better and well-rounded person with every day of my life
