Interview with Amy DeTavis, CEO of Good Move and Happy Penta Client
It is always inspiring to see people go against all odds to find their way to success. Aspiring female startup owners, in particular, are a lot less likely to receive venture funding than men.
In 2018, roughly €35.2 billion was invested into female-founded startups. This represented only 17% of the total estimated startup investments for the year. This number should seem a little low to those who see the world of business as completely fair and equal.
Today, we are going to share the story of one our favorite clients. Amy DeTavis is a great example of a female entrepreneur who went against all odds to launch her own successful startup.
Meet Amy DeTavis, CEO of Good Move Sustainable Moving
The Penta team recently had the opportunity to chat with Amy DeTavis, founder and CEO of Berlin-based moving company Good Move Sustainable Moving. We thought her success story was very inspiring and worth sharing with the world!
DeTavis has an extensive background and portfolio of experience. Before founding Good Move, she worked for over 15 years in advertising, brand strategy, communication strategy, and digital product development.
In the past, DeTavis worked with noteworthy clients such as Procter & Gamble, LVMH, Ford Motor Co., Net-A-Porter, Warby Parker and Henkel Beauty Care.
After spending all this time mastering the industry of digital products, DeTavis applied her experiences and expertise into starting her own company into something which she is passionate about: sustainability.
What is Good Move Sustainable Moving?
Good Move Sustainable Moving offers reusable moving boxes as an alternative to single-use cardboard. From €40 per move, we rent recycled plastic moving boxes. It’s a more sustainable option than cardboard that makes packing and unpacking a lot easier and quicker than using cardboard boxes.
It also keeps items better protected during the moving process. We offer free delivery and pickup, so customers just need to order online and we do the rest. Reusable boxes make a stressful event like moving so much easier, plus they’re eco-friendly.
What was the biggest challenge you have faced so far, and what are your goals for the future of Good Move?
Our biggest challenge is trying to help educate people on why reusable options are always a more sustainable choice over something that is used once or twice and then recycled. Most people don’t realize that about 1/3 of landfills are made-up of cardboard packaging material, significantly contributing to greenhouse gas emissions. Reusable moving boxes require 39% less total energy to produce and generate 95% less solid waste.
Recycling is about trying to do the best you can with waste, but our focus is trying to move towards a zero waste solution.
What does “sustainability” mean to you and how can a business be more sustainable?
As consumers, we can use our purchasing power to help make the world a better place by supporting companies that offer environmentally-friendly products and services. At Good Move, we care deeply about the impact our everyday decisions have on the Earth.
We also know that simple changes can make a big difference in contributing to a more sustainable future. Sustainability is a journey, and we’re here to help make that journey a little easier.
Why did you choose Penta? And what is your favorite feature so far?
As a startup founder, it was important for me to find a bank that understood my unique needs and challenges, which larger financial institutions simply don’t do as well, if at all. It really comes down to a shared mindset and shared values.
My experience with Penta has been great so far and very much in line with other digital service experiences in other categories: simple, easy and online. The digital verification process, for instance, was something I was familiar with from other digital services and took 10 minutes. I did it in my living room, saving me a lot of time and hassle.
What do you expect from Penta for the future? Are there any services that you would like to find on Penta?
I would expect Penta to continue to stay current with trends and advances in the FinTech space. For instance, Apple Pay would be great.
Can you discuss three entrepreneurs who inspired you, and any qualities that all entrepreneurs should have?
I’m very inspired and motivated by other female founders and investors. According to a study by First Round Capital, companies with a female founder perform 63% better than all-male founding teams. However, only 17% of investments go to companies with at least one female founder in the US.
The numbers get even worse in Europe, with only 9% of investments going to female founders, which has been declining for a few years.
So women like Emily Weiss who started the cult cosmetics company, Glossier which is now valued at over a billion dollars are really inspiring for me. I’m also a huge fan of Sofie Quidenus-Wahlforss, who founded omni:us, an AI technology that is capable of reading handwriting and of analysing vast swathes of business data. I’m also very inspired by Kristen Green, who is such a powerhouse in the VC space.
With so many new entrepreneurs entering the market each year, what advice would you give them?
I think it’s very important to have a solid amount of work experience behind you before starting a company. And then it’s all about tenacity, or never giving up. Turning an idea into action involves a never ending series of challenges. But the reward of creating something people find valuable is so worth it.
